Heat Exchangers for Solar Water Heating Systems

Reading time: 5 min read

How plate heat exchangers separate the solar glycol loop from potable hot water and keep solar thermal systems efficient and safe.

01

Why solar systems need a heat exchanger

Solar thermal collectors usually circulate a glycol-water mix to prevent freezing, which must not mix with the potable hot water it heats. A heat exchanger transfers heat from the solar glycol loop to the domestic water while keeping the two fluids fully separated — protecting drinking water and the collector loop.

02

Plate heat exchangers for solar

Compact gasketed or brazed plate heat exchangers are ideal for solar thermal systems. Their high efficiency lets the system extract heat even at small temperature differences, which matters on cloudy days and in early morning operation when collector temperatures are modest.

03

Single-wall vs double-wall

Many plumbing codes require a double-wall (double-tubesheet or vented) heat exchanger between a glycol loop and potable water so that a single leak cannot contaminate drinking water. Confirm the local code requirement before selecting single- or double-wall construction.

04

Material and sizing

Stainless 316L is standard for solar water heating; the exchanger is sized for the collector array output and the storage tank flow. Jiangxing supplies plate heat exchangers for solar thermal systems — send your collector area, glycol concentration and tank details to Evan, jxmike@shheatex.com, or WhatsApp +86 173 1725 8304.
