Heat Exchangers for Hot Tubs, Spas and Pools

Reading time: 5 min read

How a heat exchanger heats hot tub or spa water from a boiler or heat pump loop while protecting the heat source from chemicals.

01

Why use a heat exchanger for a hot tub

A heat exchanger lets you heat hot tub or spa water using an existing boiler, biomass system or heat pump without exposing that heat source to chlorinated or salt water. The boiler loop stays clean on one side while the treated spa water flows on the other, transferring heat safely between them.

02

Material matters

Spa and pool water is corrosive — chlorinated water attacks stainless steel, and salt water attacks it faster. Titanium plate heat exchangers are the recommended choice for hot tubs, spas and salt-water pools because titanium resists chloride corrosion almost indefinitely.

03

Sizing for fast heat-up

The exchanger is sized for the desired heat-up time and the boiler or heat pump output. A larger plate count transfers more heat at a given approach temperature, reducing the time to bring the spa to temperature. Pressure drop on the pool pump side should be kept low.
