Maintenance Guide for Gasketed Plate Heat Exchangers
A practical maintenance routine — inspection intervals, gasket replacement, plate cleaning and tightening procedure.
Routine inspection
Inspect the unit visually each shutdown for leaks, frame distortion, tie-bar condition and plate-pack dimension. Compare the measured pack length to the nameplate value — significant deviation indicates plate or gasket issues.
When to open and clean
Open the unit when pressure drop has risen significantly above the clean baseline, when heat transfer performance has fallen, or at the maintenance interval recommended in the operations manual. Drain, flush and depressurize fully before opening.
Cleaning the plates
Most fouling can be removed with low-pressure water and a soft brush. Avoid wire brushes or harsh abrasives that scratch the plate surface. For scale or organic deposits, use a CIP cycle with the recommended cleaning chemistry at 60–80 °C.
Gasket inspection and replacement
Inspect every gasket for compression set, cracking, swelling and bonding adhesion. Replace gaskets at the manufacturer's recommended interval — typically every 3–5 years for clip-on gaskets, longer for glued types if conditions allow.
Re-assembly and tightening
Re-assemble plates in the original sequence (verify orientation arrows). Tighten the plate pack evenly across the four tie-bars to the nameplate dimension — never tighter, as over-tightening distorts plates and shortens gasket life. Pressure-test before returning to service.
